The Center for Big Bend Studies is cancelling its annual conference in 2026, pausing the fall gathering as CBBS looks ahead to its next chapter.
For the past 32 years, the conference has brought friends, colleagues and supporters together each fall to share research, discoveries and a common appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the Big Bend region. In recent years, CBBS has discussed moving the conference to an every-other-year schedule. With new leadership coming on board, the time is right to consider the future format and timing of the gathering.
Dr. Adam Johnson, currently an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Texas at Arlington, will officially join CBBS as director in January.
“We’ve truly enjoyed bringing people together for the conference each fall, and we’re grateful to everyone who has been part of it over the years,” said Dr. Bill Adams, acting CBBS director. “This pause gives us an opportunity to look at what comes next and how we can continue creating meaningful opportunities to share the work of CBBS and connect with our community.”
Those who have already registered for the 2026 conference will receive a full refund. Contact Caiti Carvajal at 432-837-8179 or by email at caitlin.carvajal@sulross.edu with any questions.
