Sul Ross State University is proud to announce the recipients of its distinguished awards for outstanding scholarship, service, and commitment for the 2023 term. These accolades, coordinated by the Office of the Provost, highlight the exceptional contributions of faculty members who have consistently demonstrated excellence in their respective fields.
This year’s awards comprise three distinct categories: the Outstanding Scholar Award, the Presidential Award, and the inaugural Faculty Service Award, which has two well-deserving recipients.
Outstanding Scholar Award: Dr. Bryon Schroeder
Dr. Bryon Schroeder, Director of the Center for Big Bend Studies (CBBS), has been selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Scholar Award for 2023. Dr. Schroeder’s outstanding achievements in the field of anthropology have earned him this prestigious recognition. With degrees from the University of Wyoming and the University of Montana, his research portfolio has garnered praise from both the scientific and popular article realms. Notably, his work on the Spirit Eye Cave was featured in The New Yorker, bringing national attention to the CBBS. Furthermore, the Department of Education recently awarded the center a $1 million grant to enhance its anthropology program, thanks in large part to Dr. Schroeder’s leadership. He also co-directs annual excavations in partnership with the University of Kansas, making significant contributions to the scientific community and indigenous communities of the Chihuahuan Desert.
Presidential Award: Dr. Robert Kinucan
Dr. Robert Kinucan, a distinguished professor in the Department of Natural Resource Management, is the recipient of the Presidential Award. Dr. Kinucan’s illustrious career is marked by exceptional contributions to education and academia. He has taught a remarkable 138 sections of 35 different courses and authored 17 publications in peer-reviewed journals while delivering 30 conference presentations. Dr. Kinucan’s efforts have significantly impacted Sul Ross State University, including his pivotal role in developing the Blackboard online learning format and restructuring the grant office for efficiency. As Chief Research Officer, Dean of the Graduate College, and Provost, he has strengthened academic programs and improved grant support across campus, earning him this well-deserved honor.
Faculty Service Award: Dr. Christopher Ritzi and Dr. Ryan Luna
In a remarkable first for Sul Ross State University, the inaugural Faculty Service Award has two deserving recipients: Dr. Christopher Ritzi and Dr. Ryan Luna. Dr. Ritzi’s dedication to the university is evident through his involvement in numerous committees and councils, including the Graduate Council, Budget Oversight Committee, and more. He has also been an exemplary mentor, advising biology majors, and mentoring and graduating numerous Master of Science thesis students and undergraduate research projects. Dr. Ritzi’s commitment extends beyond the campus, as he actively participates in organizations like the Texas Academy of Science and contributes to educational outreach programs.
Dr. Ryan Luna, Chair of the Department of Natural Resource Management, is a multi-talented faculty member recognized for his extensive contributions. Not only has he excelled in research and academia, receiving the 2022 Outstanding Scholar Award, but he has also dedicated his time to numerous committees, mentored graduate and undergraduate students, and designed and taught various classes. Dr. Luna’s service extends beyond academia, as he actively engages with local organizations and community initiatives.
