Rock Art of the Chihuahuan Desert Borderlands: Including Papers Presented at the First Trans-Pecos Rock Art Symposium Alpine, Texas, February 17-19, 1995

Most of the papers published in this volume were originally presented in February 1995 at the first Trans-Pecos Rock Art Symposium in Alpine, Texas, hosted by Sul Ross State University and cosponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the university.

The idea for the symposium was conceived by the participants of a rock art recording expedition to Big Bend Ranch State Park in February 1993. The expedition was sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and was organized and led by J. David Ing, the Regional Cultural Resource Coordinator. The labor and much of the logistical support was provided by Nola Montgomery and others from TPWD headquarters in Austin, and by members of the Rock Art Task Force, an arm of the Texas Archeological Society.

The Chihuahuan Desert of the states of Chihuahua and Coahuila, Mexico, western Texas, and southern New Mexico is an area rich in prehistoric and historic rock art. With a rapidly growing interest in rock art by professional and avocational researchers, much needed attention has been focused on locating and recording sites throughout the area.
