Further Archeological Investigations along Big Blue Creek (Southwest and Northeast Burn Blocks), Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, Moore and Potter Counties, Texas

In August 2003, the Center for Big Bend Studies of Sul Ross State University conducted supplementary archeological survey and site re-recording for the Big Blue Creek Prescribed Burn in the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, Moore and Potter Counties, Texas. This project consisted of two burn blocks (Southwest and Northeast) along Big Blue Creek. Archeological work in the project area was implemented in order to comply with Executive Order 11593 of 1971 and Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, legislature designed to protect natural and cultural resources in the course of federal undertakings. Twelve previously recorded sites were revisited and three new sites recorded. Six isolated occurrences were documented as well. Fuel loads are generally light within site areas and there are no intact features that could be jeopardized by low-intensity prescribed burn. Given that all site locations will be avoided by destructive activities associated with the actual burn (such as vehicular traffic and cutting of fire line), no sites will be adversely impacted by the proposed burn.
